gots to add that ghetto S – “barnes & nobles”

August 4, 2010 at 1:14 AM (Uncategorized, what what's the word) ()

it always makes me smile when i hear someone add an “S” to the end of words that don’t actually have them.

most recent example, overheard last night:

“barnes & nobles”

this one was extra funny because i was IN the barnes and noble at the time, and there are signs all over the place.

misuse of the english language – irregardless

April 17, 2010 at 6:26 PM (what what's the word) ()

third vote – irregardless.

while it is a word (according to mirriam webster: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irregardless), it is NEVER the right word.

why not use regardless or nonetheless or anyway or in any event or despite instead?

misuse of the english language – orientated

May 6, 2009 at 6:11 AM (what what's the word) ()

my first vote is for “orientated”.  if u live in the US, u should know that the word is oriented, not orientated.

http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutgrammar/oriented

Orientated is currently preferred use in general British use. Oriented is prevalent in technical use, and in the US.
